Lessons In Business. #Process

For the love of #process.

We talk a lot about work process - it's bantered around from one meeting to the next. For us at Feeney #process is a series of interlinked steps assigned to the team (this includes the client). The utopia is to deliver what we promised and ultimately exceed expectations!

If everyone in the business performs their specific tasks, hopefully one that they are competent with or specialise in, we achieve our goal. But the reality is we’re all human and sometimes steps need to be repeated or transferred to someone else to get the job to the next stage or to completion. Let’s also remember we need to upskill and train staff and oftentimes this is on the job.

We represent our business processes as workflows, simply represented as a flowchart - a logical sequence of steps that we share with our team when they start and it’s regularly updated for improvement and so we need to continually discuss and modify the processes.

Here are some examples that break down process into categories that can be applied to almost every business:

  • Operational process

  • Management process

  • Supporting process (training)

The important thing I’ve come to realise in my years in business is that you need to constantly review the process, map the steps, make changes and discuss with your team. If everyone has a voice and is clear and understands the steps it helps with ownership and accountability and this goes a long way to minimise any double handling, increases productivity and ultimately everyone can be proud of the achievement.
